Presented in the magnificent setting of the millennia-old Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the Cruise 2022 collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri is an ode to the perpetuation of multifaceted femininity across civilizations and cultures. A dialogue with craftsmanship around the world, this collaborative effort features the involvement of numerous Greek artisans and ateliers in particular, with exchanges that highlight savoir-faire virtuosities in a process of collective creation. The Parthenon was the location for a photoshoot of House models wearing couture designs by Monsieur Dior in 1951, and this complementary juxtaposition finds new meaning in the modern mix of architectural tailoring and soft pleating and draping, in contemporary takes on the classical peplos. The ancient Olympics are referenced in iconography that alludes to painted ceramics and a hybrid fusion of athletic layerings and sporty elements. Gender boundaries are broken down and the body liberated in softened silhouettes that prize movement and effortless elegance, giving new life to icons such as the 'Bar' jacket and 'Dior Oblique' motif. A collection for now, it rewrites the rules with a starting point from the past and a vision focused fully on the future.
